UNBC men grasp Griffins’ home court, women’s weekend fall short

The UNBC Timberwolves are leaving Edmonton in a split series with the MacEwan University Griffins, including a sweep on the men’s side of the court.

The men put up a close fight from opening tip-off, but pulled out a 78-75 victory Friday night and a 85-83 rout on Saturday.

Forward Volodymyr Pluzhnikov led the offense with a combined 42 points in the two games, while going 86% (12/14) at the free-throw line.

The Ukraine product also picked up a double-double in the second win (13 points, 10 assists), and Vaggelis Loukas of Greece recorded his first triple-double of the 2017-18 season (21 points, 17 rebounds, 11 defensive rebounds).

The Timberwolves improve to 4-6 and a tie for 10th in the standings with the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV).

The lady Timberwolves were unfortunately bested by MacEwan in two extremely close matches on the hardwood.

Less than 10 points separate both losses for UNBC as the Griffins held on for a 58-50 win on Friday, and a 59-57 edge on Saturday night.

Third-year guard Maria Mongomo led UNBC’s scoresheet with 35 points over the two contests, including a double-double on Friday night (20 points, 10 rebounds).

Prince George product Madison Landry combined for 19 points and led the team in free-throw percentage with 88% (7/8).

UNBC drops to a 3-7 record through the first 10 games of the 2017-18 season, sitting 14th in the standings.

T-Wolves basketball continues their road-stint next weekend in Kamloops, taking on the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack.

Tip-off goes for 6PM and 8PM on Friday, and 5PM and 7PM on Saturday.
