The Prince George Spruce Kings won their home opener in front of 1.424 fans, 6-4 over the Chilliwack Chiefs. Chad Staley scored twice and added two assists and BCHL scoring leader Justin Rai notched a goal and two assists for the 5-1 Spruce Kings, who built up a 4-0 lead early in the 2nd period. It was the first loss of the season for the 4-1 Chiefs. The teams have a rematch tonight (Saturday) at 7 at the PG Coliseum.

–The Prince George Cougars acquired 17-year-old forward Cal Babych from the Calgary Hitmen in return for a 7th round WHL Bantam Draft pick exchange for a seventh round pick in the WHL Bantam Draft. The 5’10”, 182 pound Babych scored three goals and added three assists and 11 penalty minutes in 41 games last season with the Hitmen. This season in one game, Babych recorded three assists. Cal is the son of long-time NHLer Dave Babych.

–The Prince George Cougars play tonight (Saturday) in Spokane and Sunday in Vancouver.

–The 3-0-1 Cariboo Cougars host the 3-1 Greater Vancouver Canadians in BC Major Midget League action today (Saturday) at 4:45 and Sunday at 11:30 at Kin 1.

–The UNBC Timberwolves are home for the final time this season in Canada West Soccer when they host Trinity Western University today and Sunday at noon and 2:15.

–The UNBC men’s basketball team beat NAIT 88-67 in an exhibition game in Edmonton.
