Prince George and Vanderhoof are under a special air quality advisory for a third consecutive day as per BC’s Ministry of Environment and Environment Canada.
This is due to large levels of polluted matter in the current high pressure weather system, preventing them from moving out of the area.
However, Air Quality Meteorologist Gail Roth says a cold-front is coming.
“With that, we’re expecting to see a little bit more turbulence, and we are anticipating that air quality should improve. So we probably will keep the advisory on until the solution concentrations decrease.”
According to Roth, a team of meteorologists collectively examine the air concentration over a 24-hour time period before making a final decision.
“If the fine particulate matter drops below below 25 micrograms-per-metre-cubed, that’s typically when the advisory comes off. Once we’re confident that we’re not going back above our provincial objectives, then that’s when we remove the advisory.”
With the expected change in weather conditions, she predicts the advisory to be lifted over the weekend, but urges residents to abide by Northern Health’s precautions.
This includes avoiding outdoor strenuous activity, and any form of recreational burning.
