Community Energy Association leading the charge for electric cars in the North

The Community Energy Association is looking to keep Northern BC on par with other parts of the province and country with electric car charging stations.

Executive Director Dale Littlejohn presented to council Monday night with the group’s plan.

The route extends from Haida Gwaii to Kamloops, following Highway 16 through various cities and towns in the north including Prince George, Smithers, and Vanderhoof.

“To drive tourism, local economic development, and to give people choice,” Littlejohn lists the benefits of this project.

“We’ve just done this in the Kootenays, its worked there, we’re doing it in Southern Alberta, it’s time that the north was in.”

Littlejohn says a big part of it is keeping with the times.

“It’s quite important to get it done now to help satisfy the unmet demand that’s already out there,” he explains.

“People want to drive electric vehicles but aren’t comfortable with it.”

For the North, the powerpoint presented to council shows planning and preparing capital to take place this year, while charger deployment will happen between 2018 and 2020.
