Construction continues in Cottonwood Island Park as a new bridge is set to connect the west side of the park with the island.
“If we go back to 2007, in the same location there used to be a bridge that connected the west side of the park with the island,” says Project Manager Michael Le Morvan.
“It’s always been in our minds but just because of budgeting we have been having a little bit of difficulty but this last year we’ve got some money.”
Funding for this project totals $369,000; Le Morvan estimates they will use slightly less at $350,000.
He says the city is taking advantage of an opportunity now that they have proper funding.
“What happened is because there wasn’t direct access in the west side, not many people use that part of the park.
“Right now we’re doing the ramps and the beauty of the ramp is it helps for universal accessibility so people with difficulties, the elderly, kids, mothers with strollers, can all go through the bridge with no problem.”
The main construction of the bridge is estimated to be completed in the next few weeks, with safety rails being the finishing touches completed by spring.
