Local skier named alternate for Olympic ski cross team

Another Prince George athlete has caught the eye of team Canada’s Winter Olympic squad.

Tiana Gairns has been named as an alternate for the ski cross event.

Being an alternate, Gairns will not travel to South Korea for the games unless an athlete on the team is injured prior to the event.

She says that doesn’t matter to her.

“I wasn’t expecting to be in any part of the Olympics at all so it’s not much of a disappointment,” Gairns explains.

“Even just being named as an alternate, that was way more than I was expecting so it’s crazy I was that far in that and I’m very honoured to be a part of the team.”

Being from Northern BC makes it that much more special to Gairns.

“It’s such an honour, especially being from Prince George in such a small town, it’s great that we can represent someone in the Olympics, or just having a part in it,” she says.

“It just makes it so that the whole community is more engaged in the Olympics and I’m glad I can be a part of it.”

Gairns will be on standby waiting for if, or when, the call is made for her to suit up for Pyeongchang.
