31st IceMan Challenge could see better racing conditions

Prince George’s annual winter marathon returns for its 31st contest next month.

The IceMan is a chilling challenge that includes running, cross-country skiing, skating at the Ice Oval, and indoor swimming for individual races as well as team relays.

Spokesperson Jim Van Bakel says the long-range forecast is looking great for racers.

“Temperatures are predicted to be minus-five to minus-10 of highs; minus-15 or minus-16 as lows. That is much better than what it has been in the past; we’ve been dealing with some really warm temperatures the last three or four years, and then of course five years ago, we had had to cancel the whole thing because it was too cold.”

Residents have a little more than a week to sign up themselves or assemble a team.

Van Bakel, who competed in his first IceMan last year, is hoping for the same turnout of more than 500 athletes as he saw in the 30th run in 2017.

“This year, we’re expecting similar numbers from what we’ve seen by registrars already, which is a good thing. So last year, our total number of registrants for around 530 people, and includes people locally and from across the country.”

The competition takes place Sunday, February 11th, and Van Bakel says volunteers are still needed.
