It was a glass half-full, glass half-empty feeling for the UNBC Timberwolves during the opening round of the Canada West basketball playoffs.
On one hand, the T-Wolves men’s team is advancing in the playoff party, thanks to a thrilling 71-68 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen on Thursday while the women saw their season come to an end after dropping an 82-65 decision to the University of Winnipeg.
The Lady T-Wolves jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the opening quarter, but could never regain their offensive touch on a consistent basis through the final three quarters.
Faith Hezekiah and Antoniette Miller paced the Wesmen with 24 points each in the victory.
UNBC’s big three of Madison Landry, Vasiliki Louka and Maria Mongomo all reached double-digit points in defeat.
It was a much different story for the men’s varsity team who were neck and neck with Winnipeg all night long at the Duckworth Centre, finally pulling away in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Wesmen 13-6.
Jovan Lemay picked up a team-high 18 points in the victory and Vaggelis Loukas recorded 10 rebounds.
The Timberwolves advance to next week’s best-of-three matchup against the top-ranked Alberta Golden Bears beginning February 16th.
