If you think you’re alone for Valentines Day, it turns out you’re not the only one.
Over 12 million people, aged 15 and over, say they are single according to Statistics Canada.
“This is partly due to the fact the population is growing every year, but also we’ve seen the number of people not in a couple has grown faster in the last ten years, compared to a number of people in a couple,” says demographer for Stats Canada Nora Galbreigh. “That could be for a number of reasons, it could be linked to the fact that the population is ageing, so, people are less likely to be in a couple at older ages, also the trend of younger adults increasingly living with their parents.”
Common-law relationships are also becoming a trend compared to traditional marriage, although marriage unions still make up the majority of couples in Canada.
Love is also on the rise for same-sex couples with it accounting for 0.9 per cent of all couples in Canada in 2016, and same-sex marriage grew 60.7 per cent between 2006 and 2016.
“Starting in 2005 same-sex couples became legal in Canada, so of course we saw a large increase following that, and a number of couples, particularly same-sex couples, that were married in the senses.”
This is a trend being seen around the world as same-sex marriage becomes legal in different countries.
