YMCA sets $60,000 goal for financially-challenged families

Prince George, Vanderhoof, and Fort St. James residents struggling to make ends meet or gain physical activity for their kids will once again be cared to by the YMCA of Northern BC.

The community centre has officially launched its 2018 Strong Kids Campaign with a goal of raising more than $60,000 to help more than 250 kids and youth get into camps and programs.

According to YMCA Manager of Philanthropy Stephanie Mikalishen-Deol, the pot has already started with $8,000 given my the centre’s board of directors, staff payroll deductions, and other forms of donations.

In a statement, she adds this on-going campaign encourages young people to reach their full potential, physically, emotionally, socially, and mentally.

“Last year, one in five kids coming to our YMCA programs and one in four for our camps needed financial assistance, and that need continues. We want to provide a healthy, safe, and positive environment where children, teens, and young adults can flourish, and the [YMCA Strong Kids] campaign helps make that a reality.”

The YMCA of Northern BC services over 840 children every year through financial assistance programs.

All 44 YMCAs across Canada have set a national goal of $13.6 million.
