BC Hockey Regional Centre could open door for female hockey players

The BC Hockey Regional Centre in Prince George will provide more opportunity to play the sport in our region, including for girls.

That was put on display Sunday as three female skills clinics were put on at Kin 1 by the Female Midget AAA Northern Capitals.

“I think it’s a great thing, especially for female hockey, I think it’s really important to promote high-performance athletes across the sport,” says Northern Capitals Coach Megan Price.

“Really to grow the female program, it’s crucial to have up here for sure.”

This was part of the grand opening of the centre, which is only the second of its kind in British Columbia.

Price believes the camps this weekend, as well as future camps, will open the door for more opportunities for young girls across all sports.

“The commitment to hockey is huge and the best thing about playing hockey is it’s a winter sport,” she explains.

“So you can be an athlete who plays basketball or soccer in the summer and you can compete in several different sports.”

Over 50 girls participated in the skills clinics.
