Air and water protection are the key focuses of new liquefied natural gas legislation introduced by the province today.
Environment Minister Mary Polak says the Greenhouse Gas Industrial Reporting and Control Act puts benchmarks for green house gas emissions on LNG facilities.
“Including the purchase of offsets, as well as technology fund contributions, this is the most effective way to meet the provinces climate goals, while ensuring industry competitiveness .”
The benchmark for LNG facilities will be 0.16 tons of carbon dioxide for every ton of LNG produced.
Companies will also have to report their emissions yearly and will have industry feedback.
Polak says facilities that produce below the standard of greenhouse gases can receive a credit they can sell.
