No charges after young girl dies in crash

A mother from McBride is outraged that Crown Council has decided not to press charges in connection to the death of her daughter.

Sherri Quam’s 12 year-old daughter Sheraya was killed in May 2013 on a camping trip with friends in Mackenzie when she was riding in the passenger side of a jeep with an 11 year-old driver, as a 41 year-old man sat in the back seat, when the jeep flipped and crashed.

Crown counsel says there is not enough evidence to convict the man for criminal negligence, but that isn’t good enough for Quam.

“To me that just states that nobody has enough guts to try and even pursue it,” she says. “I just don’t know what to make of it all. It’s wrong. It’s illegal for a child to drive. It’s wrong.”

Quam wants to warn parents to make sure they know what their kids are doing when they head out on a camping trip. with other families.

“You should never allow your child , let alone someone else’s, to [operate] a vehicle,” she says. “I feel the other mother was very irresponsible in looking after my daughter.”

She says the ordeal has weakened her faith in the legal system and she plans to fight this decision.
