Sunny, warm spring weekend ahead for Prince George

The start of spring will be rolling into northern BC as we head towards the weekend.

Daily temperatures of six and seven degrees with sunshine are being predicted for Saturday and Sunday in Prince George.

Environment Canada Meteorologist, Greg Pearce that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

“Next Monday it’s getting up to plus ten, Tuesday plus twelve and those warm temperatures will continue through the week next week and we’re not expecting any precipitation at this time, enjoy the weather while you can and enjoy the sunshine and the much milder temperatures.”

He believes the winter season has been given the boot and will make way for the spring-like temperatures.

“Everything that I have looked at in the long range seems to indicate this mild weather will continue for at least a couple of weeks, I think we have turned a corner as spring is knocking on the door and it should be here this weekend.”

Pearce expects the northern capital to be under a freeze-thaw cycle for the next little while as the snow continues to melt.

As for the potential risk of any spring flooding to occur during this warmup, Pearce isn’t expecting any trouble spots at this time.

“Fourtanently overnight lows will either be at or below freezing, so we’ll probably go through a freeze-thaw cycle each day with the most melting in the afternoons but the overnight periods and early mornings we’ll see temperatures around freezing. Right now it doesn’t look too hazardous and of course, as we get into April and May if we get an extended period where temperatures get up into the 20’s and overnight lows are above freezing, that’s when we’ll see a much more rapid snowmelt.”

The overnight and early morning hours were met with five to seven centimeters of snow in Prince George with some fog and reduced visibility at the local airport this morning.
