BC River Forecast issues March outlook with no real concerns for Prince George area

The BC River Forecast Centre continues to monitor the snowpack levels across the north.

They issued their latest report last week and section head Dave Campbell says the region still isn’t at much of a risk of flooding.

“The Upper Fraser basin upstream of Prince George is about 108 percent of normal as of March 1 and then as we come to the west side Stuart-Tackla is a bit higher at 138 percent of normal and then the Nechako is at about 95 percent of normal.”

Campbell adds the higher range in Stuart-Tackla is coming from a couple of sights and is not considered widespread but we do see higher snowpack closer to the northwest.

He believes they’ll get a more accurate sense of what the spring outlook will be in their following report next month.

“April is a pretty good benchmark for us for what the seasonal risk is and I think once we get to that seasonal survey we’ll be trying to highlight and pull out some of the issues that might not come up in the border basin index that we use as we go into the melt season.”

The above-seasonal temperatures is a good thing right now because it’s melting the lower-elevation snow.
