Province announces changes to Mines Act

Written by: Rebecca Dyok.

Changes to the Mines Act will now extend the time allowed for investigations.

The amendments which were announced yesterday, were much needed according to Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett.

“We were planning to make more changes to allow more time, not just for the investigation of accidents at mine sites, but also for the Crown prosecutors’ office to make decisions about whether charges will be laid for for statutory officials in the various Ministries to decide what penalties should be levied,” Bennett says.

The Mines Act will give the government up to three years from when the Chief Inspector of Mines first learns of an incident to pursue charges for offences committed under act.

The act which will apply to the Mount Polley Breach, had originally allowed only up to one year.
