Aboriginal culture shines at CNC

Aboriginal art, medicine, and language was put on display Tuesday at the College of New Caledonia‘s Prince George campus.

The school’s annual Aboriginal Culture Day celebrates the history and traditions of First Nations in the region.

“For me, this is a really powerful time to share our culture,” explains mature student Tom Mowatt, who had a booth with his sister at the event.

“I’ve picked up doing artwork as a product of the Indian Act and Residential Schools; I went to the prison and I learned how to do artwork and everything.”

Presentations were also held at noon starting with traditional singing and dancing. Mowatt also presented, being a storyteller and artist of the Gitxsan Nation‘s Wolf Clan.

“The value of native culture has been recognized, that it’s still alive today because of the strength of it and reclaiming our identity and sharing that,” Mowatt says.

There were 11 total presentations, including Lheidli T’enneh Elders and CNC instructor Bruce Allan, who showed how to play the traditional game Lahal.
