The University of Northern BC will have two extra names to announce for this year’s convocation as Thomas Berger and Lawrence Hill will receive honourary Doctor of Laws degrees.

Berger is a prominent lawyer and former BC Supreme Court Justice.

“Mr. Berger has an incredibly long and tremendous past in connection with the north,” says UNBC President Dr. Daniel Weeks.

“The work he’s done with Aboriginal people, Aboriginal rights, is just an amazing story.”

As for Hill, he is an award-winning author for work such as The Book of Negroes which alone pulled in 11 Canadian Screen Awards in 2016.

“His work around issues to do with diversity and inclusion and human rights in so many ways connects so strongly with the model of the university,” Dr. Weeks says.

“The ability for us to connect our values to the work that he’s done in his career is a real pleasure for us.”

The pair will receive their honourary degrees at UNBC’s 2018 convocation, May 25th.
