$190,000 announced for Hosting BC grants

The provincial government will put in $190,000 in funding for 41 sports events in British Columbia in the coming months, as announced Monday by Parliamentary Secretary for Sport and Multiculturalism Ravi Kahlon.

“Hosting BC grants bring so many benefits to British Columbians. They support events which inspire people to volunteer, welcome visitors to our province, and provide a boost to local businesspeople by bringing more customers to their area,” said Kahlon in a statement.

“All that, and the grants enable people in communities large and small all around the province to enjoy some thrilling athletic competitions.”

The Hosting BC grants are administered by viaSport and give $500,000 annually for events.

“We definitely encourage any event locally that fits those parameters to go after those dollars,” says Tourism PG CEO Erica Hummel.

“The event fund at the provincial level is designated for sporting events but its also, sometimes I’ve noticed, been given out to cultural events as well so it’s very accessible.”

Hummel says if you are unsure, you can contact them for help.

“It’s a good opportunity, even if you’re not sure, talk to us and we can help you with support letters and parameters around what they’re looking for.”

This is different from the City of Prince George’s Sport PG Hosting Grant, which deals with smaller local events, while the provincial funds are for larger events.
