Climb for Cancer right around the corner

Saturday, April 21st, marks the Climb for Cancer event in Prince George.

The fundraiser sees people climb the Prince George cutbanks and raise money for the Kordyban Lodge, which acts as a home away from home for those battling cancer in the city.

This is the third year for Climb for Cancer, Committee Member and Operating Partner at the Northern Lights Estate Winery, Doug Bell, explains how it came to be.

“The cutbanks had an opportunity to grow in exposure and we really wanted to focus on local charities in Prince George,” he says.

“We had the opportunity to meet with the Canadian Cancer Society and they really felt like there was an opportunity to expand on Daffodil Month.”

Bell describes Daffodil Month as a time to expose people to growth and hometown atmosphere, making it a perfect time for the Climb for Cancer.

It can be daunting to look up the cutbanks and wonder how you will make it up, another Committee Member, Vanessa Hamilton, says there is no judgement during this event and that everybody is welcome to take part regardless of fitness level.

“There are some people that get on their hands and knees and get right into it, others follow the footsteps that were already there,” she explains.”But nobody needs to be scared of doing it, everybody can do it!”

Individual awards will be handed out in three categories: Youngest Climber, Fastest Male, and Fastest Female. The Kordyban Cup will be earned by the team who ends with the most fundraising.

Mayor Lyn Hall also officially declared April 21st as Climb for Cancer Day in Prince George last month.
