Billet families plan an important role when someone travels to play sports and a bond is often formed between the family and player.
Billets are mourning the Humboldt Broncos tragedy as well as the birth families, with Prince George Spruce Kings billet Renee McCloskey saying she can not imagine what those families are feeling.
“Losing someone that you’ve grown so close to in such a short amount of time and watching them pursue their dreams, going through the most exciting time of their life, and then to have it cut short so tragically, I can’t even begin to fathom what that’s like.”
McCloskey billets Spruce Kings captain Kyle Johnson. She explains the type of bond her family has formed with him.
“I have a 12-year-old son that Kyle is basically like his big brother,” explains McCloskey.
“Not having Kyle around for after this hockey season is going to be a real tough adjustment for our family, you get very used to having these young men in your house.”
The GoFundMe supporting the Broncos’ families has raised over $12 million at this time.
