Northern Health is responding to claims from a Fort St. James family that one of their members may have come into contact with HIV while being immunized.
Northern Health has issued a response saying they have apologized to the family, and are offering support while they review the case.
“The College of Physicians and Surgeons and College of Registered Nurses have polices in place to limit the practice of exposure prone procedures. Health care providers are expected to work within those guidelines. Providing immunizations is not a limited practice for those with an identified blood borne pathogen.
It is also important to point out that employers cannot identify and discriminate against people based on their blood borne pathogen status, including HIV and Hepatitis B. Our staff have a right to personal privacy and it is a human right to continue to work.” – Northern Health.
The family has asked to not be identified.
