UNBC staff member selected as Professor Emeritus

UNBC is bestowing the Professor Emeritus title onto one of its long time members.

Dr. Richard Lazenby is credited with developing the University’s Anthropology department and continues to be influential in shaping the Northern Health Medical Program.

He also served as a forensic anthropologist consultant with the B.C. Coroner’s Office and the RCMP’s Major Crime unit for three decades.

Lazenby says it’s an honour for them to award him because there is a process to being selected.

“At UNBC, you have to be nominated, selected and discussed at a senate where a decision is made. I think it’s a greater recognition when that happens because it’s your peers discussing your career and how much you have contributed to both the university and profession.”

After 23 years of service, Lazenby retired at the end of December, but didn’t officially stop teaching until April due to him being scheduled to teach his anthropology course. He says he never really had the time to look back on what he’s accomplished in his career.

“You tend to be a bit more reflective when you have the time, and when you’re transitioning into a new phase of your life, to look back and remember the people who have been involved in my journey and all the colleagues I’ve worked with at the university and around the world in terms of research.”

A convocation ceremony will be at UNBC held May 25.
