Rising water levels forces City to close Portions of Cottonwood Island Park

The City of Prince George has closed the island in Cottonwood Island Park because of rising water levels from the Nechako River.

Signs and barricades have been placed at locations, which include Replica Bridge and the newly constructed bridge on the west side of the park.

The canoe launch area just north of the railway bridge is also blocked off.

So far, the main closure is to the island in the park and City staff is continuing to monitor river levels and may close the rest of the park if the situation worsens.

Prince George is currently under a special weather statement.

Environment Canada issued the warning yesterday afternoon, saying temperatures reaching 20 degrees combined with significant snow melt has resulted in increased water levels in the Central Interior.

A Pacific system has advanced to our area and it’s expected to bring 5 to 10 millimetres of rainfall.
