BC HOCKEY AWARDS:

BC Hockey held its Awards Banquet Saturday night at Sun Peaks.

Cariboo Cougars general manager Trevor Sprague was the recipient of the Development – Male Program of Excellence Award.

Ward Pateman of Prince George was named Official of the Year.

 

NHL:

The Capitals will continue to celebrate their Stanley Cup championship with a victory parade in downtown Washington on Tuesday.

Forward Brett Connolly of Prince George (nine points in 24 playoff games) and ex PG Cougars coach Lane Lambert, now an assistant coach with the Caps, will be a part of the celebration.

GOLF:

Cody Bailey of PG finished with a six-under-136 (-6) total to post a whopping 13-stroke victory at the Junior Simon Fraser Open at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club.

The 17-year-old Bailey has qualified for the B.C. junior boys championship July 3rd to 6th in Kamloops.

Dustin Johnson has once again taken over as the world’s top-ranked golfer, thanks to a victory at the FedEx St. Jude Classic.

It is his second PGA Tour victory this year and 18th of his career.

Johnson recaptures the number-one ranking he held for 64 straight weeks before falling to number-two behind Justin Thomas a month ago.

 

TENNIS:

Rafael Nadal claimed his record-extending 11th French Open championship Sunday by crushing number-seven seed Dominic Thiem in straight sets in the final.

The 32-year-old Nadal is up to 17 majors, second among men only to Roger Federer’s 20.

The two have combined to win the past six Slams.

The victory allowed the 32-year-old Nadal to hold onto the number-one ranking, ahead of Federer.

 

MLB:

Toronto Blue Jays  13  Baltimore Orioles  3

The 30-35 Blue Jays swept the four-game series in Toronto.

The Jays visit the 29-35 Tampa Bay Rays tonight to begin a three-game road trip.

 

HORSE RACING:

Justify is just horse racing’s 13th Triple Crown champion.

Justify, the 4-5 favourite, went wire-to-wire to win the 150th Belmont Stakes in New York by one-and-three-quarter (1 3/4) lengths.

 

CFL: 

CFL teams reduced their rosters to 46 active players Sunday.

Teams can carry as many as 10 additional players on their practice roster.

The CFL regular season kicks off Thursday with Edmonton at Winnipeg.

The BC Lions open at home on Saturday against Montreal.
