Prince George passenger dies in Smithers incident

A single vehicle incident in Smithers Saturday night resulted in the death of a Prince George resident.

Before 11PM, first responders, including RCMP and BC Ambulance, received calls of a vehicle in a ditch off Railway Avenue with three people inside.

A 21-year-old was ejected from the car and later died in Bulkley Valley District Hospital, while another passenger was treated for minor injuries.

The 22-year-old driver fled the scene on foot, but was eventually caught by a police dog service unit and he remains in custody as Mounties continue to investigate.

Several serious Criminal Code offences are being considered as a result of the incident.
