Suicide rates in Northern Health among the highest: BC Coroners Service

According to the BC Coroners Service, Northern Health has the highest suicide death rate.

The Health agency recorded 20 deaths per 100,000 individuals, passing the provincial average of 13 deaths per 100,000.

People aged 40 to 69 accounted for 53 per cent of those deaths with 74 per cent being men. The three most common means are by hanging, poisoning and fire arm.

In BC, there were 599 suicides in 2016, down from 615 in 2015, a decrease of 2.6 per cent.

2016 marks the second consecutive year where suicide deaths have declined.
