City responds to 170 downtown safety concerns since mid-May

The City of Prince George is trying to make streets in the downtown core safer and cleaner for residents and businesses.

Since the middle of last month, two new employees, known as City Bylaw Compliance Assistants, have dealt with 170 concerns, most of them involving illegal homeless camps on both public and private properties.

They’ve also carefully removed garbage, including improperly disposed syringes, while connecting people who need extra help to outreach centres and coordinating bigger clean-ups with Parks and Solid Waste Services.

These staff members are part of a new public safety summer strategy approved by City council earlier this year.

They can be seen anywhere from commercial areas along 1st Avenue between Carney Street and the Fraser River to the commercial areas near Patricia Boulevard and Queensway.

The Bylaw Assistants program will continue until the end of September, when a review will take place.
