After an international student was struck and killed on highway 97 the College of New Caledonia is removing a pathway in the area.
The concrete walkway was originally an old bus stop used for students, but transit has since moved to an inner road on campus.
Alyson Gourley-Cramer, Executive Director of communications, says the school worked with partners from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and the City of Prince George to analyze the area the campus sits on and where they can increase safety for students.
“The land that the sidewalk sits on is actually ministry land but CNC is doing its part to remove the sidewalk and therefore remove access to the highway from the sidewalk.”
She adds they are looking into increasing education about students staying cautious when around the highway.
“We currently already do road safety education at orientation time with our new students, but we are also putting more resources into international students at each intake and will be working with our student union and ICBS on this.”
Gourley-Cramer says the option of an overpass being installed is an ongoing discussion and no decisions have been made yet.
