Hail storm hits Prince George with more on the way

A second summer storm in two weeks pelted Prince George Wednesday afternoon, sending dime-sized hail to primarily the west and south sides of the City.

Environment Canada recorded a series of ‘intense’ storms over the Northern capital at the same time, bringing more thunder, lightning, and rain for roughly 30 minutes.

“We’re forecasting the possibility of thunderstorms and there’s a risk of hail again,” explains Meteorologist Doug Lundquist.

“So, it’s kind of a cooling-off trend here for the next three days and then warming up for next week and the chance of thunderstorms and hail to be decreased as we start to warm up.”

He says an unstable air mass is still imminent, which means, despite an expected high of 27 degrees today, we could see more hail this afternoon.

Lundquist adds because of our location in the province, this particular weather is ‘as normal as it gets.’

“The Central Interior of BC is an area where typically, we can get more severe thunderstorms, and I think we’ve even seen some very weak tornadoes too. But again, it’s because it’s fairly flat in the region, whereas further north or south, it’s more mountains and valleys.”

He predicts cooler temperatures will end the week with a 70% chance of showers for Saturday.

Lundquist also confirms if the situation worsens, Environment Canada will issue a severe thunderstorm warning to the Prince George region.
