“It’s definitely been a good month for the team and I;” Young reflects on solid June

Prince George product Jared Young picked a good time to heat up his bat.

The 22-year-old was named the Chicago Cubs minor league player of the month for June after posting a .340 batting average that included five home runs and 27 RBI’s.

Young says his success is tying in nicely with the team’s recent play.

“It’s definitely been a great a month for the team and me, we had a pretty good stretch there where we won a lot of baseball games and at home were playing really good baseball.”

The first baseman adds he has kept it simple at the plate after getting off to a rough start earlier in the year.

“I am not trying to do too much, I felt like early in the year I had a few years I was just swinging too hard and really trying to get away from who I am as a hitter and when I got back to what I was doing for a few years really helped.”

Sometimes the biggest adjustment to the pro game can be more mental than physical where it’s easy to get too high when things are going well and too low when the bounces aren’t going your way.

“Honestly, to go out and play every day and not look too much at the numbers because we play so many games I guess it can wear you down if you look too much into it.”

He has also been named a Midwest League All-Star for the South Bend Cubs, joining four of his teammates.

The Cubs are 42-42 so far this season and are pushing for a playoff spot the second half of the season.
