WIMBLEDON:

Angelique Kerber won her third career Grand Slam title.

The 20-year-old German beat 36-year-old Serena Williams 6-3, 6-3 in the women’s final at Wimbledon.

The men’s final Sunday at Wimbledon features #12 Novak Djokovic against #8 Kevin Anderson.

In the semis Djokovic edged Rafael Nadal (#2) 10-8 in the 5th and deciding set.

Kevin Anderson got by American John Isner (#9) 26-24 in the fifth set.

Isner defeated Canadian Milos Raonic in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

The BC Lions host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers tonight at 7.

Travis Lulay will start at QB for the 1-2 Lions.

The 43-50 Blue Jays snapped the Red Sox 10-game win streak.

Toronto continues its four-game series in Boston today (10:05AM), and Sunday (10:05AM).

The 2018 All-Star Game from Washington, DC goes for Tuesday at 5PM.

 

Minor League Baseball:

Infielder Jared Young of Prince George and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans beat the Down East Wood Ducks 3-2 Friday.

Young had a hit and drove in a run for the 43-49 Pelicans.

He upped his batting average to .227 since being called up to the Chicago Cubs Advanced Class A affiliate.

PRINCE GEORGE SENIOR LACROSSE:

The RPR Mechancial/J.R. Construction Bandits and the Westwood Pub Devils begin the best-of-five PG Senior Lacrosse Final on Tuesday.

The same teams met in the 2017 championship series, with the Devils prevailing in five games.

Game time is 8PM at Kin 1.

Prince George resident Cole Paciejewski is playing for Scotland at the Federation of International Lacrosse World Championships in Israel.

Australia beat Scotland 18-6 on Friday: Paciejewski did not have a point.

The tournament runs until Friday, July 20th.

 

CALLIE SWAN:

Cyclist Callie Swan of Prince George hits the road for the last of six consecutive races in the Lower Mainland.

Swan is competing in BC Superweek, a series of events putting cyclists against the best-of-the-best from around the world.

The 20-year-old’s best finish thus far is 11th place out of 62 in the New West Grand Prix on Tuesday, posting a time of 59:46.

The Tour de White Rock runs today and Sunday.

 

NHL:

The Vegas Golden Knights have signed goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to a three-year, $21 million contract extension.

The 33-year-old’s new deal officially kicks in for the 2019-20 season.

Fleury earned 29 wins in 46 starts last season for Vegas with a save-percentage of 0.927.

The Winnipeg Jets have locked up goaltender Connor Hellebyuck.

The 2017-18 Vezina Trophy finalist has agreed to a six-year, $37 million contract.

Hellebyuck posted 44 wins in 64 starts last season, including six shutouts, leading the Jets to the Western Conference Finals.
