University Heights housing project highlights building permits boom in PG: Hall

Construction work continues to progress with Phase Six of the University Heights project in Prince George.

It’s being designed as a 52-lot single family subdivision and passed fourth reading during Monday’s city council meeting.

Building permits for single-family dwellings have been on the rise over the past two years with 111 being issued worth a combined 35-million dollars.

Mayor Lyn Hall says they are on pace for a massive year in 2018.

“Year-to-date we are sitting at approximately 71 permits issued for single-family residential worth a total of 39 million dollars, so when you see building like this taking place on the single-family residential side it really shows a great deal of confidence in our economy in Prince George.”

Mayor, council and the city’s economic development office continues to push the benefits of coming to a desired location such as Prince George through its Move Up PG website to let people know what’s currently out there in the local housing market.

“It’s still very, very affordable here compared to other cities of like-size throughout the province, it’s very economical and prices are still very affordable and people can get into the market and that’s the key push for us.”

“I think the other thing is people throughout the province, especially developers are starting to recognize Prince George has a tremendous amount to offer and that offering as I have said really is around how affordable it is to get into the housing market so that pushes up our numbers.”

The average selling price in Prince George this year is around $356,000 according to the BC Northern Real Estate Board.
