PG resident installs new book exchange in hopes of ending stigma

A local resident is using his skills to give back to the community he grew up in.

On Monday July 9th, an outdoor book exchange near Ron Brent Elementary was vandalized when it was set on fire.

B3 elite Contracting’s Derek Andrew decided to build a new book exchange to break the stigma surrounding the area.

“I attended kindergarten and grade one at Ron Brent. I didn’t live too far from Ron Brent Elementary as well, and I noticed when the post originally went up It was a lot of talk of just a bad neighborhood. I thought to myself I came from there and this is something I can step up and take care of to destroy that stigma.”

He added the response from the community was quick.

“I was quite surprised on how much attention it got. I know it was pretty disheartening when the post went up about it being burnt down, but for how many people have reached out along with all the comments likes and share just about it being put up was quite surprising. I had a lady bring a couple of kids while I was installing it to put books in it.”

Andrew installed the new library on a tree in hopes it will discourage people from vandalizing it.
