Jared Young continues to tear it up in his first full season of minor league baseball.
The 23-year-old from Prince George was named the Chicago Cubs minor league player of the month for July, the second straight month he has claimed the award.
Young is currently suiting up for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the High A Carolina League after starting the season with the South Bend Cubs where he was named a mid-season Midwest League All-Star.
It’s pretty safe to say the move down south has been a unique experience.
“South Carolina is a hot spot, I’ll give it that. It is one of the hotter places I have played baseball that’s for sure, it’s great and I am loving Myrtle Beach as it is a great place to live, nothing but good things.”
Since joining the Pelicans on July 7th, Young has a .289 batting average with four home runs and 14 RBI’s.
The Pelicans are 50-65 heading into the home stretch of their season.
Young believes his team has one more push left in the tank.
“We have about 20 games left to finish up strong, it’s not quite how we wanted the season to end up but we can still end on a high note.”
In a combined 94 games this season with Myrtle Beach and South Bend, the Northern BC product has amassed a .307 batting average with 14 homers and 67 RBI’s.
The initial voyage into the pro baseball ranks has been quite the ride.
“It’s been a good year so far. It’s quite a long year we’re getting into the 130 mark now, it’s been a little longer than I anticipated but it’s been a lot of fun.”
Despite his accolades, the communication between him and the Major League club has been limited as the Cubs are pretty high up in the standings.
“They’ve got their hands full up there trying to win another championship and we’re down here in the minors so it’s a little bit different than what most people think.”
Young was selected in the 15th round of last year’s MLB Draft by the Cubs out of Old Dominion.
