A large crowd greeted the UNBC Timberwolves in their Canada West basketball home openers against the Mount Royal Cougars. UNBC won the men’s game 71-60 before 1,300 fans. Mount Royal edged the UNBC women 60-59. The same teams meet again tonight at 5 (women) and 7 (men) at the Northern Sport Centre.
–Former Cariboo Cougar Josh Connolly notched four assists for the Kamloops Blazers in a 5-2 victory over the Prince George Cougars. The Blazers snapped a 2-2 tie with three unanswered goals in the third. The 12-13 Cougars continue on the road tonight against the Giants in Vancouver. The Giants lost their home game Friday 6-2 against Regina.
–The Alberni Valley Bulldogs scored the winning goal (from Everett Putz) with just 22 seconds left in the third as they beat the Prince George Spruce Kings 4-3 in front of 1,127 fans at the Coliseum. The Bulldogs tallied three unanswered goals in the second. The 14-10-0-2 Spruce Kings continue an 8-game home-stand Tuesday against the West Kelowna Warriors.
–The 17-2 Prince George Female Midget Northern Cougars hockey team scored a 3-1 win over the West Coast Avalanche. The two teams meet again today and Sunday in Coquitlam.
