Southbound Winnipeg lanes to close, cause of sinkhole discovered

The southbound lanes of Winnipeg Street will close Tuesday as crews continue to work on the sinkhole near the intersection of Carney Street/20th Avenue and Winnipeg/Massey Drive. This closure will remain in place until further notice.

Crews found a failure in a large storm sewer pipe about three metres north of a manhole at the site. The section is about six metres long and has partially collapsed below the groundwater table. Holes up to ten inches in diameter have formed on the pipe and water flows suck nearby material into the pipe during large rainfall events, which causes sinkholes. The southbound lanes of Winnipeg are now required to close for crews to expand the excavation site to allow for safe access to the stormwater pipe to fix it.

Earlier this summer, crews installed a temporary dam to allow enough water to be removed from the area around the sinkhole to allow crews to identify the cause.

The City of Prince George expects the project to take a few more weeks to complete.
