Timberwolves fall short against highly offensive Spartans

Rob Goodey held the UNBC Timberwolves men’s soccer team in there for as long as he could but in the end it wasn’t quite enough.

Despite a 10-save performance from the third-year goalkeeper, it was the Trinity Western Spartans who preserved to a 2-1 road victory over the T-Wolves on Saturday from Masich Place Stadium.

The Spartans aggressive attack led to constant pressure in the UNBC defensive zone forcing Goodey to make a number of Grade A stops to keep his team in the game.

After some near misses by Trinity Western in the first half, it would be the Timberwolves who drew first blood off of a corner-kick goal by Conrad Rowlands giving UNBC 1-0 lead at half-time.

Trinity Western continued to ramp up the pressure in the second half, taking the ball away from the T-Wolves scoring twice less than two minutes apart courtesy of Matthew Roxburgh and Caleb Johnson.

“We played our hearts out, everybody left it on the field and a couple of calls didn’t go our way but that is the game of football. We can’t assume that the referee is out to get us because that is not the case at all, we get on with the chin, we get on with it and that’s football, all credit to everyone they did everything they possibly could it just wasn’t our day,” said Goodey.

It might have felt like a shooting gallery of sorts for the goalkeeper as UNBC was outshot 20-2 overall even though half of those attempts didn’t reach the goal.

“It wasn’t just me in the goal, everybody was blocking shots anyway they could so credit to all of them they did a splendid job they really did.”

Both teams played an instant classic on Friday battling to a 3-3 draw.

Cody Gysbers, Anthony Preston, and Francesco Bartolillo rippled the onion bag for UNBC who are now 0-1-2 to begin the season and will head out on the road next weekend and play the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon.

The UNBC women’s soccer team kicked off its Canada West season on Saturday with a 2-2 draw in Kelowna against the UBCO Heat.

Paige Payne netted both goals for the Timberwolves.
