Gauthier shines in Cougars season-opening shootout loss

A terrific dual between goalies Taylor Gauthier and Griffen Outhouse to open up the WHL regular season.

Dino Kambeitz scored in the fifth round of the shootout to give the hometown Victoria Royals a 2-1 victory over the Prince George Cougars.

The 17-year old Gauthier blanked the Royals for over 58 minutes before giving up the tying goal to Brandon Cutler with just 67 seconds remaining.

Josh Maser put Prince George on the board at 4:49 of the third.

Gauthier made 33 saves while the 20-year old Outhouse, a former Cariboo Cougar, blocked 28 for the Royals.

The same two teams play again tonight in Victoria.

The Cougars began their 25th WHL regular season by naming Josh Curtis the 24th captain in franchise history.

The Cats have four alternate captains.

They are Joel Lakusta, Jackson Leppard, Josh Maser, and Ryan Schoettler.

The Cougars home opener will be played on Friday against the Kelowna Rockets.
