Cougars are victims of a Giant size sweep

For the second straight game in Prince George, the Vancouver Giants used one big period to carry them to a
weekend sweep at CN Centre.

On Friday, Vancouver scored three unanswered goals in the third for a 3-0 victory.

On Saturday, the Giants tallied three consecutive goals in the second period and then held on for a 3-2 triumph before 2,393 fans.

The complexion of game two changed early in the middle frame.

At the 11-second mark, Cats forward Josh Maser was given a five-minute major for slewfooting.

Three minutes later, P.G. defenceman Austin Crossley was handed a two-minute minor for playing without a helmet.

The Giants took advantage by scoring on the 5-on-3, as Bowen Byram set up Milos Roman who tied the game at 1.

Byram would notch the winner on a highlight-reel backhand goal with 38 seconds left in the period, after Parker Hendren tallied his first WHL goal at the midway mark.

The 17-year-old Byram is a projected first-round pick by NHL Central Scouting for next year’s draft.

Joel Lakusta opened the scoring in the final minute of the opening period.

That was the Cougars first goal in 106 minutes.

It was also the first goal allowed by the Giants in 164 minutes.

Lakusta would score again early in the third with the man advantage.

That was just the Cougars second power-play goal in 34 chances this season.

Trent Miner, 17, was sharp in the Vancouver net making 33 saves, 14 of them in the third.

Isaiah DiLaura, 18, in his first start of the season, blocked 25 of 28 shots.

The 6-1 Giants improved to 4-0 on the road while the 2-4-0-1 Cougars dropped their third straight as they wrapped up a four-game homestand.

The Cougars play their next three games on the road starting Friday in Medicine Hat.

They also visit Lethbridge Saturday and Kootenay Sunday, Oct. 14th.
