The Prince George branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association is planning its 33rd year of the “Gift of Hope”. The Christmas dinner and dance is for up to 250 individuals with severe of persistent mental illness.
Executive Director Maureen Davis says the stigma behind mental illness leaves many people isolated;
“They end up being very isolated. Often from family, friends and the community in general. So Christmas for them, is often just another day. We really want to be able to help provide them with the opportunity to have a celebration like other people”
Davis continued saying the night is very important to some attendees;
“We have individuals phoning and telling us that they look forward to this every single year. At times this might be the only gift they get for the entire Christmas. For some it might be one of the few times they get out for a social event as well.”
The association will also give out over 500 gifts. If you would like to contribute, gift drop boxes are located at stores around the city. You can also make a cash donation to help pay for the dinner/dance or sponsor a whole table for $160.
