Molby, Timberwolves blank Wolfpack to keep playoff hopes alive

Even though The Bee Gees were nowhere near Prince George on Friday, the UNBC Timberwolves women’s soccer team took a page out of the band’s playbook.

With their backs up against the wall, the Timberwolves put up a solid 2-0 victory over the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack at Masich Place Stadium.

UNBC got some secondary scoring from Hannah Emmond (first in U-SPORTS) and Ashley Volk, who beat Wolfpack goalkeeper Danielle Robertson.

Volk said the team was quite composed with the pressure-packed situation.

“I think it was a really positive atmosphere in the change room and we were all excited to play knowing that if we get a result today the challenge continues and hopefully we make playoffs.”

The T-Wolves received a lights-out performance in goal from Brooke Molby who was a last minute insertion into the lineup replacing fellow keeper Madi Doyle.

It was easily the Squamish product’s best performance since joining the university ranks and it could not have come at a better time.

“I felt pretty good, I was really nervous and when Madi wasn’t going to go in I was really scared but I felt like I had a really good game and made a lot of saves and the team had my back a lot so I thought it was really good.”

Her 12-save shutout against TRU forces a really interesting slate of games heading into the last day of the regular season.

The Wolfpack (3-9-1) who fell to UNBC (2-8-3) will now head to Edmonton on Sunday and play the MacEwan Griffins (9-3-1) who also did the Timberwolves a favour by beating the UBC-Okanagan Heat (3-8-2) 4-1.

The Heat and Timberwolves will clash at Noon from Masich Place Stadium where if UNBC wins and TRU loses, the T-Wolves clinch the sixth and final playoff spot in the Canada West Conference.

Fifth-year player Madison Emmond passed former teammate and UNBC alum Tianna Pius in the all-time games played category with 67.

Emmond and Kylie Erb are both graduating from the program this season.

UNBC’s men’s soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 decision against the Fraser Valley Cascades in Abbotsford on Friday.

The Timberwolves drop to fourth in the Pacific Division with a 5-4-5 mark.

Both teams play again Saturday at 6:30PM.

If the UNBC men win or tie, they will secure a playoff spot.
