It’s day two of the most recent Air Quality Advisory for Prince George.
It has been above-seasonal over the past two weeks with temperatures reaching the mid to high teens.
“The air pollution we’re seeing is being locally driven and it’s being trapped in the valley so it’s a combination of local emissions and the weather that’s causing the elevated concentrations,” said Gail Roth, Air Quality Meteorologist.
“Typically we do see sunny weather during those conditions but it’s how the air is moving under those conditions, which it’s not, it’s quite stable and that’s what traps the air pollution under the ground surface.”
However, Roth isn’t expecting the advisory to last too long.
“The conditions today right now are better than they were yesterday at the same time and I’m anticipating to see continued improvements through this afternoon and this evening. I am not expecting this to last too long.”
The announcement was made yesterday by Northern Health and the Ministry of Environment.
Exposure is mostly a concern for babies, seniors and those with lung or heart disease.
Anyone with chronic health issues should avoid strenuous activity.
If you experience symptoms of coughing, wheezing or irritation with your eyes or throat, you’re encouraged to see your health care provider.
