SD57 BOARD PREVIEW: Tuesday, October 30th

The current School District 57 (SD57) Board of Trustees are meeting for one last time tonight.

On October 20th, Prince George elected a brand new panel of trustees, which included the re-election of Tim Bennett and Sharel Warrington for another four years.

Before evening’s end, a number of topics will be discussed, including a report on Duchess Park Secondary as student enrolment has seen a slight decrease, despite being over-capacity.

More than 1,000 students take up the 900 available spaces at the school and a review committee continues to explore creative solutions to the issue.

SD57 will also talk about school closures on snow days.

This event is hardly seen within the City, forcing students, parents, and teachers to brave the conditions and prompting the PG District Teachers’ Association (PGDTA) to request a policy change to ‘3541.53 – Winter Weather.’

Earlier this month, a policy committee discussed the PGDTA’s proposal based on the harsher-than-normal conditions the City witnessed back in February.

A recommendation is also on the table to approve a new outdoor learning space at Vanway Elementary.

An unknown donor has already contributed $20,000 towards the construction in memory of Pam Schellest, a former SD57 teacher.

Trustees will detail all of the above topics and more starting at 7PM from the Ferry Avenue offices.

November 6th is scheduled to be the inaugural meeting for the new five-member board, which will also include Betty Bekkering, Trent Derrick, and Ron Polillo.
