New classification sees increase in Highway maintenance

Highway 16 and 97 have seen snow maintenance upgrades and personnel increases over the past year since being re-classified as class A level roadways.

Scott Maxwell is the Regional director of transportation for the Northern region, and says key upgrades were added earlier in the year:

“We’ve been really pleased with the results we’ve had from the additional resources on the maintenance classification. So it’s involved new equipment, extra material such as winter abrasives and salts, and extra facilities for our maintenance contractors to be able to deliver this better service”

Class A level roadways are classified as needing more frequent maintenance and quicker response times for work crews.

Maxwell says there was a $4.1 million dollar cost for up front changes, with a $2 million dollar increase in annual costs, saying they are pleased with the results after the first few winter storms and says they will look to make changes where they are needed.
