Changes on the way for dangerous intersections?

An accident at the intersection of Domano Boulevard and Gladstone Drive/St. Lawrence Avenue last Friday had some College Heights residents calling for the City to look at putting up lights or a four-way stop.

“A lot of the concerns are with pedestrian traffic even though there is a crosswalk. It’s a high traffic area, people are zipping through there and they’re speeding along Domano,” said Councillor Brian Skakun.

“I think people are concerned about two things: pedestrians and a major vehicle incident and I think it’s just a matter of time.”

Since January 1st, 2017, Prince George RCMP said only six accidents had happened at the location. Three listed at Domano and St. Lawrence and three listed at Domano and Gladstone. Corporal Craig Douglass did say the intersection and surrounding area is one police are aware of.

In response to concerns raised, Skakun posted on a local Facebook group that intersection improvements, specific to Domano and Gladstone/St. Lawrence, would be taken to council. He told My PG Now the City has been aware of the situation for a while and it would likely come up in January when the City has its budget discussions.

On top of the already listed intersection, a few others around the city could also be looked at.

“We have the intersection at O’Grady and Domano, which is a huge problem, we have some problems with some intersections up at the Hart Highway, I think off of Austin Road and some other places,” Skakun explained.

“So there are a number of intersections that our administration is aware of.”

These projects, Skakun said, could mirror the process of the Ospika Boulevard and Ferry Avenue intersection project. It took about two years from start to finish for those lights to be set up.

“We had to do the engineering work the one summer, the next summer we got the lights in. A lot of times if there is no light post, no markers or poles, then it takes a lot of work but the intersection at Domano and St. Lawrence/Gladstone I think has a lot of those poles there so it could be at a reduced cost. Some of these intersections and crosswalks, though, need some major money spent on them.”

Skakun noted the importance of letting City officials and councillors know about concerns like these.
