The eighth annual Community Christmas hosted by Vista Radio is currently underway from our studios along Ferry and Ospika.
Last year’s fundraiser saw $50,000 worth of food, winter clothing, and cash supported the Saint Vincent de Paul Society.
The cost of food is getting less affordable every day, putting less fortunate families in a bind.
“People on a fixed income haven’t had any increases and their food dollars aren’t going as far as they used to do anything like toys for the kids, gifts for teenagers, we just want to make Christmas morning a little better for families,” said Bernie Goold, spokesperson.
As for what items are needed the most, Goold says there are a few items that come to mind.
“Canned fruit juices, snack packs for kids, toques, mitts, and scarves are big issues for this time of year right before Christmas because kids are always losing their gloves and mitts.”
The public is being called upon once again to step up to the plate and give generously to assist in-need families.
Goold says the northern capital has a big heart and past contributions from the public have not gone unnoticed.
“We open our doors 365 days a year without a budget and we depend on the generosity of the public and fundraising like this is such a big, big part of our Christmas hamper campaign.”
The two-day fundraiser ends tomorrow at 6 PM.
