UPDATE: Wind warning for Prince George, Hwy97 showing limited visibility

UPDATE – 11:30AM:

Environment Canada is warning Prince George residents and the surrounding area of strong winds heading our direction.

The agency has issued a special weather statement indicating a wind warning.

A low-pressure system is expected to hit the Northern capital by Friday afternoon, bringing winds as high as 80-kilometres an hour.

The region experienced heavy southerly winds overnight already, causing a build-up of frost and ice along certain sections of Highway 97 north.

This includes areas near Bear Lake, McLeod Lake, and Mackenzie and commuters are being asked to slow down and drive to the conditions, not the speed limit.

An incident already took place this morning near Powder King Mountain Resort, but has since been cleared.

A pick-up truck driver was also killed this morning in the Peace Region after colliding with a semi-truck on Highway 97 south of Taylor.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Prince George commuters heading North on Highway 97 today should drive with extra caution.

Slippery sections are in the mix for today’s forecast due to overnight frost and ice build-up.

Limited visibility is also listed in areas near Bear Lake, McLeod Lake, and Mackenzie.

Drivers are asked to respect the conditions and be aware of others around you, including semi-trucks, snowplows, and emergency crews.
