Prince George RCMP has taken a youth into custody following an incident at Kelly Road Secondary School.
The school went into lockdown after a reported safety concern and police responded at 8:53AM.
A weapon was located upon arrival and the lockdown was cancelled after 20 minutes.
“Incidents like this within our schools are taken very seriously by the police and the quick response by our officers ensured this matter was resolved safely,” says Cpl. Carmen Kiener of the Prince George RCMP.
No one was injured and there are no further safety concerns.
“Principal Steve McRae did call a lockdown to a report he’d received that there was a threat,” explained School District 57 (SD57) Superintendent Marilyn Marquis-Forster.
“The situation, of course, was monitored from a safe distance and manner by staff.”
She added she’s relieved the incident didn’t last longer than what it did.
“Our staff are well trained in these situations; everyone is safe, which is always the goal. It’s great when we hear the words ‘lockdown,’ it’s a short situation, things are neutralized, everybody safe within a very short period of time and that’s about as good as it gets.”
SD57 also thanks the students of Kelly Road, staff, and parents for their patience.
