Spruce Kings fall short against Chilliwack in marathon shootout

The hockey gods often say the last shot wins.

During a Sunday matinee between the Chilliwack Chiefs and the Prince George Spruce Kings that could not have been more true as the top two teams in the Mainland Division battled right to the bitter end of an eight round shootout with the Chiefs coming out on top.

Matt Holmes netted the game-winner past Prince George goalie Logan Neaton giving the hosts the 4-3 edge on the scoreboard and also putting Chilliwack two points up over the Spruce Kings in the pennant race.

Chilliwack blew a pair of leads throughout the contest (1-0 and 3-1) soiling the early offensive contributions from Harrison Blaisdell, Carter Wilkie and Nathan Kelly.

Ben Brar notched his 26th of the season in the second period from Dustin Manz and Patrick Cozzi to give the visitors a puncher’s chance in the third.

Chong Min Lee and Nick Poisson would eventually come through for the Spruce Kings scoring both unanswered goals sending the game to overtime.

Both teams went 0-for-3 on the man advantage with Prince George outshooting the Chiefs 29-21.

Sunday’s game was the Spruce Kings debut of Nicholas Wilson and Lucas Vanroboys who were both acquired at the BCHL Trade Deadline from Cowichan Valley on Wednesday.

Another road trip awaits the Spruce Kings next weekend with stops in Vernon, Penticton and West Kelowna.
